Position Overview

Jamaica Hospital Medical Center is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Trauma Registrar to join our Trauma Department team. In this critical role, you will support trauma research, performance improvement, injury prevention initiatives, and patient care outcomes through accurate trauma data collection, coding, and reporting.

The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills, healthcare knowledge, and experience with trauma registry data management.

Key Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Trauma Program Director (TPD), the Trauma Registrar will:

  • Identify and track trauma patients according to national, state, and organizational guidelines
  • Abstract, code, and accurately enter trauma data into the trauma registry using ICD-10 and Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) methodologies
  • Maintain at least 80% concurrent trauma registry completion within 60 days of patient discharge, in compliance with ACS standards
  • Submit data to:

– National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB)
– Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP)
– New York State Trauma Registry

  • Participate in data validation and Inter-Rater Reliability (IRR) review processes
  • Generate reports for the Trauma Medical Director (TMD), Trauma Program Director (TPD), and Performance Improvement Team
  • Assist with trauma research, reporting, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Identify and communicate patient safety or quality concerns
  • Attend trauma-related educational meetings and maintain continuing education requirements

Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Strong computer and data entry skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines

Proficiency in:

Preferred

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare-related field
  • 2+ years of healthcare-related experience
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Prior Trauma Registrar experience
  • Experience with trauma registry databases and coding systems

Certifications Preferred

  • CSTR – Certified Specialist in Trauma Registry
  • CAISS – Certified Abbreviated Injury Scale Specialist

Professional Development Requirements

Selected candidates will complete or maintain:

  • Basic Trauma Registry Course
  • AAAM Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) Course
  • ICD-10 Coding Course (including refresher training every five years)
  • 24 hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME) every 3-year verification cycle
