Surgical Technologist (OR Tech / Scrub Tech)

Our hospital continues to grow through major initiatives, including modernization of our Emergency Department, expansion of our Level I Trauma Center, and our affiliation with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, with the opening of a new state-of-the-art Cancer Center.

We are currently seeking Surgical Technologists to join our Operating Room team.

Position Summary

The Surgical Technologist is a vital member of the surgical team who assists in the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care in the operating room. Under the direction of surgeons, registered nurses, and anesthesia providers, the Surgical Technologist prepares the operating room, maintains a sterile field, and provides direct assistance during surgical procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Preoperative Responsibilities

  • Prepare operating rooms by setting up sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment
  • Ensure surgical instruments and equipment are properly sterilized and functioning
  • Assist with patient preparation, positioning, draping, and skin preparation as directed
  • Participate in surgical time-outs and verification processes in collaboration with the surgical team
  • Organize instruments and supplies to anticipate procedural needs

Intraoperative Responsibilities

  • Maintain a sterile field throughout surgical procedures
  • Pass instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies to surgeons and assistants
  • Assist with surgical counts in collaboration with nursing staff
  • Assist with suctioning, retraction, and application of dressings as directed
  • Handle and prepare specimens according to established protocols

Postoperative Responsibilities

  • Assist with breakdown of sterile fields and proper disposal of biohazard materials
  • Clean, restock, and prepare operating rooms for subsequent procedures
  • Assist with patient transport as directed by nursing staff
  • Assist with tracking and documentation of surgical supplies for inventory and billing purposes

Requirements
  • Education: Associate degree or certificate from an accredited Surgical Technology program.

Certification:

  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or equivalent certification.

Experience:

  • Clinical experience through training or 1-2 years prior work in an operating room setting preferred.
  • BLS through the American Heart Association

Skills:

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to anticipate surgeon needs.
  • Knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques.
  • Ability to work in high-pressure environments.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
