Position Summary:
A Surgical Technologist (Scrub Tech or OR Tech) is a vital member of the surgical team, responsible for ensuring the operating room (OR) is prepared, sterile, and functioning efficiently. They assist surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses during surgical procedures by providing instruments, supplies, and maintaining a sterile environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Preoperative Preparation:
• Prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies.
• Ensure proper sterilization and functioning of surgical tools and equipment.
• Preparing and transporting patients for surgery
• Verify patient identity and confirm surgical site with the surgical team.
• Assist with patient positioning, draping, and skin preparation.
• Anticipate the surgeon’s needs by arranging surgical instruments in an organized manner.
Intraoperative Duties:
• Pass surgical instruments, sponges, and sutures to the surgeon and assistants as needed.
• Maintain a sterile field throughout the procedure.
• Monitor and manage surgical counts of sponges, needles, and instruments to prevent retained surgical items.
• Handle and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis.
• Assist with suctioning, retracting tissues, and applying dressings.

Postoperative Responsibilities:
• Help with the removal of used surgical instruments and disposal of biohazard materials.
• Clean and restock the operating room for subsequent procedures.
• Transport patients to the recovery room as needed.
• Document supplies used during surgery for inventory and billing purposes.

Requirements

• Education: Associate degree or certificate from an accredited Surgical Technology program.
• Certification: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or equivalent certification.
• Experience: Clinical experience through training or 1-2 years prior work in an operating room setting preferred.
• BLS through the American Heart Association
• Skills:
• Strong attention to detail and ability to anticipate surgeon needs.
• Knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques.
• Ability to work in high-pressure environments.
• Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
