Registered Nurse – Psychiatric Emergency Room

About Us:

The Department of Psychiatry at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center offers a comprehensive range of mental health services, including Psychiatric Emergency Care, Inpatient and Outpatient Psychiatry, a Mobile Crisis Unit, and an Inpatient Chemical Dependency Unit. Our dedicated psychiatric nursing team plays a vital role in supporting patients on their journey to mental wellness. We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurses (RN’s) to join our Psychiatric Emergency Department. This role involves providing compassionate, skilled care to individuals experiencing acute psychiatric crises. As part of a multidisciplinary team, the Psychiatric RN will be instrumental in assessment, crisis intervention, medication administration, and therapeutic support.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct intake interviews and comprehensive mental health assessments
  • Evaluate patients’ emotional, behavioral, and physical status.
  • Monitor and document changes in condition and treatment response.
  • Administer prescribed psychiatric medications, including PRNs.
  • Monitor effectiveness and adverse reactions.
  • Provide patient and family education on medications.
  • Respond promptly to behavioral emergencies.
  • Utilize approved de-escalation techniques and restraints when necessary.
  • Collaborate with psychiatrists and crisis teams for stabilization.
  • Build trusting relationships with patients through active listening and empathy.
  • Support patient goals through group therapy or psychoeducational sessions.
  • Advocate for patient needs within the healthcare team.
  • Maintain detailed, timely documentation of care and assessments.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary treatment planning.
  • Communicate with family members as appropriate and with patient consent

Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
  • Current New York State RN license.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications (American Heart Association).
  • Minimum 1–2 years of experience in behavioral health or psychiatric nursing preferred.
  • Previous experience in psychiatric emergency or acute inpatient settings is highly desirable.
  • Strong therapeutic communication and crisis management abilities.
  • Knowledge of psychiatric medications and treatment plans
