Jamaica Hospital Medical Center located in Queens, NY has an employment opportunity for an Attorney with significant experience providing legal counsel and advice regarding employment and labor matters including but not limited to wage and hour laws, workplace safety, disability leave laws, workplace harassment, employment discrimination, and wrongful discharge. 

The ideal candidate has three to five years of experience handling employment and labor matters for a large complex organizati`on and is also skilled in alternative dispute resolution, negotiation, legal writing, and advocacy and counseling.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:   

  • Respond to employment related complaints submitted by employees to regulatory agencies such as NYSDHR, NYCCHR, EEOC and NLRB.  Investigate claims and draft position statements, mediation statements and other documents in connection with such complaints.
  • Address pre-litigation disputes by providing legal advice, investigating claims, gathering information, communicating with opposing counsel, drafting relevant documents and negotiating resolutions.
  • Investigate internal employee complaints regarding issues such as workplace safety, workplace harassment, and employment discrimination.
  • Represent the Hospital at arbitration hearings and court appearances as necessary. Serve as a hearing officer for internal grievances filed by union employees.
  • Develop and deliver management training and education regarding current and emerging topics related to employment and labor law to minimize risk and legal exposure to the Hospital.
  • Review and revise employment processes, policies and procedures to minimize risk and legal exposure to the Hospital.
  • Participate in labor negotiations as needed.
  • Partner with outside counsel to address employment disputes and litigation matters.
Requirements
  • Juris Doctor from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school. Licensed to practice law in New York State.
  • Effective legal research skills
  • Effective communications skills (oral, written and interpersonal).
  • Ability to build a rapport with employees of varying levels within the Hospital
