ASL INTERPRETER

Jamaica Hospital Medical Center a member of the Medisys Health Network is a fully accredited community-based teaching hospital and Level I Trauma and Stroke Center. We are proud of our uncompromising commitment and approach in providing the highest levels of professional, compassionate care to the many underserved patients and residents in Queens. We are currently seeking an experienced American Sign Language Interpreter for an immediate full-time day shift position in our Language Assistance Program. The Language Assistance Program at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center offers a wide range of interpreter services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients.

DUTIES

  • Selected candidates will provide interpreting services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients and hearing health care professionals in a variety of medical settings.
  • Facilitating communication through the use of sign language, spoken English, cultural mediation, and knowledge about visual accessibility..
  • Providing training to educate staff working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients.
  • Relaying information accurately and completely in compliance with hospital policies and procedures, patient confidentiality, and informed consent, as well as the Code of Professional Conduct for the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
  • May manage auxiliary aids and services for individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing.
Requirements
  • RID Certification required
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • College Degree in ASL Interpretation preferred.
  • Minimum 1-2 years prior experience as a medical interpreter
  • Knowledge of medical terminology in English and American Sign Language.
  • Ability to communicate in different registers in English and American Sign Language.
  • Cognitive ability to provide interpretation services in all clinical settings, according to RID Standards of Practice and Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Good communication and behavioral skills.

Salary Range:  $60,000 – $75,000  depending on experience
