JAMAICA HOSPITAL MEDICAL CENTER, a major health care facility located in Queens, N.Y. is seeking Clinical Laboratory Assistant in our Pathology Department.

Job Summary:

The Clinical Laboratory Assistant performs a variety of general support duties in specimen procurement, clerical, central processing, and/or other assigned areas at an entry skill level. Performs and interprets limited procedures in the Pathology Department at all times. May perform minor preventive tasks as well as ordering laboratory supplies. The phlebotomist practices proper patient identification, label the vials as per protocol, transports specimens to the laboratory while maintaining excellent customer relations skills.

Responsibilities:

  • The Lab Assistant is responsible for maintaining a smooth flow of specimens in and out of the laboratory
  • Collect and process samples, such as blood, urine, tissue, and stool
  • Prepare reagents and solutions
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, such as microscopes and centrifuges
  • Prepare lab equipment for experiments
  • Report data and compile information into graphs and documents
  • Clean and maintain lab equipment
  • Gather data and information from test subjects

Additional Responsibilities:

  • They must also follow strict safety protocols to protect themselves and others from potentially hazardous materials.
  • Possess strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work well in a team environment,
    • Effectively communicate with other healthcare professionals.

Requirements
  • High School diploma required or GED equivalent.
  • Certificate as a Phlebotomist with 2 years’ experience including newborns and children required.
  • Computer oriented (data entry of routine & stat requisitions).
  • Type a minimum of 35 wpm.  Retrieval & proper distribution of patient records.
  • Register patients for Phlebotomy procedures & other lab tests performed, collate lab reports, answer phones, and ability to troubleshoot errors.
  • General clerical duties.
