The WIC Department at Jamaica Hospital seeks a full-time Medical Assistant for immediate full-time opportunity.

DUTIES: Primarily responsible for providing on-site assessments, i.e conducting hematology tests and antropometric measurements.  Screening prospective applicants, issuing appointments, certifying participants, answering telephone promptly, filing and outreach activities.

  • Perform on-site assessments, inclusive of anthropometric and hematologic testing for all WIC Participant.
  • Perform Overview of all prospective and current WIC applicants on NYWIC.
  • Prescreen applicants to schedule certification appointments.
  • Issue initial and subsequent certification appointments according to NYSDOH mandatory time frames.
  • Certify and recertify WIC participants, according to Local Agency and NYSDOH policies and procedures; verify category, income, and residency information.
  • Assist Nutritionist by verifying participant's documentation and obtaining pertinent signatures on NYWIC.
  • Provide the most up to date copy of the Participants’ Rights and Responsibilities statement in the appropriate language prior to initiating the enrollment process.
  • Document referrals on NYWIC, familiar with referral agencies and social service programs.
  • Perform outreach activities pertaining to participant retention, including, but not limited to: placing reminder calls and rescheduling participants as needed.
  • Participate in health fairs, to promote WIC services in the community.
  • Work on special NYSDOH WIC program initiatives.
Requirements
  • Must have valid current Medical Assistant certification.
  • Minimum High School Diploma, some college credits preferred.
  • REQUIRED SKILLS AND /OR EXPERIENCE
  • Prior customer service experience preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Bilingual preferred (Second Language depends upon the population served).
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to implement standard operational program policies & procedures throughout MediSys sites.
  • Experience working with women and/or children in any type of behavior modification program; teaching. health/wellness, fitness, reading, nutrition, physical activity; peer counseling.
