BREASTFEEDING PEER COUNSELOR

DEPARTMENT: WIC PROGRAM    PART TIME: 20 HOURS

The WIC department at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center is a top-tier WIC program provider. Our (4) WIC program sites offer a variety of services including nutrition education, supplemental food benefits, breastfeeding support, referral to community organizations, and education on how to sustain a healthy lifestyle. We are currently seeking a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor for an immediate part-time opportunity.

DUTIES: 

The selected candidate will assist Program Director in the implementation of the Special Supplemental Food and Nutrition Education Program for Women, Infants, and Children.

Under the direction and supervision of the Breastfeeding Coordinator and the Breastfeeding Assistant, the primary responsibility of the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor will be to serve as a support person providing in-person, telephonic, and onsite basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to an assigned caseload of pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.

  • Documenting and recording contacts with WIC mothers.
  • Referring mothers, according to established clinic protocols to other providers including WIC nutritionist, breastfeeding coordinator, Lactation Consultant, social service agencies and, other public health community programs.   
Requirements
  • Minimum High School or General Equivalency Diploma
  • Must be a prior WIC participant and have prior breastfeeding experience for at least one baby.
  • Must be extremely passionate about breastfeeding and be willing to educate, promote and advocate breastfeeding to other mothers.
  • Must have a pleasant demeanor and exhibit outstanding customer service skills at all times. Good writing, reading, and communication skills.
  • Bilingual preferred (Spanish, Bengali, Hindi, or Haitian Creole).
