ASSISTANT HEAD NURSE – EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT (NIGHT SHIFT)

Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, a member of the MediSys Health Network, is a 404-bed, fully accredited community teaching hospital and a designated Level I Trauma Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center serving Queens and the surrounding communities. Our Emergency Department is one of the busiest in New York, providing advanced emergency, trauma, and critical care services 24 hours a day.

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Assistant Head Nurse to join our Emergency Department Night Shift Leadership Team. The successful candidate will provide clinical, operational, and administrative leadership while supporting the delivery of high-quality patient care in a fast-paced, high-acuity emergency and trauma environment.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide operational and administrative support to the Emergency Department Nurse Manager.
  • Assist in the supervision, coordination, and evaluation of nursing staff on the night shift.
  • Ensure safe, efficient, and timely patient care in a high-volume Level I Trauma Center.
  • Coordinate staffing assignments and maintain appropriate nursing coverage based on patient acuity and departmental needs.
  • Monitor patient flow and collaborate with physicians, nursing staff, ancillary departments, and hospital leadership to optimize throughput and quality outcomes.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and mentor to staff, providing hands-on leadership and support during emergency and trauma situations.
  • Participate in staff recruitment, onboarding, orientation, education, and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, hospital policies, and evidence-based nursing practices.
  • Investigate, document, and assist in the preparation of incident reports, quality assurance reviews, and patient safety initiatives.
  • Promote a culture of teamwork, accountability, patient-centered care, and professional excellence.

Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited BSN Nursing Program required; MSN preferred.
  • Current New York State Registered Nurse License required.
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS Certifications required.
  • Minimum three (3) years of Emergency Department nursing experience in a high-acuity setting.
  • Prior leadership experience as a Charge Nurse, Assistant Head Nurse, Supervisor, or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience in a Level I Trauma Center, Critical Care, Emergency Services, or Acute Care setting strongly preferred.
  • Excellent clinical judgment, communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead effectively in a fast-paced emergency and trauma environment.
