Blood Bank – Clinical Lab Technologist

The Department of Pathology and Clinical Laboratories at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center is a state-of-the-art, full-service laboratory that performs approximately 1.5 million tests annually to help detect, diagnose and prevent disease. The department includes the clinical divisions of Anatomic Pathology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology and Phlebotomy.

Job Summary:

In this role, the successful candidate performs established clinical laboratory tests and procedures. Interprets and reports as accurately as possible to assist physicians in diagnosis and treatment. Duties may include blood collection, clerical tasks, answering telephone inquiries, using data processing equipment and all other duties as required in the assigned section.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Ability to perform ABO/Rh Type and Antibody Screening, DAT, Elutions, Antibody Titers and FMH Fetal Screening.
  • Must be proficient in Antibody Identification and difficult crossmatch.
  • Follows established procedures to perform routine and special analyses. Documents any deviation from established procedure with supervisor’s approval
  • Checks that an adequate supply of materials is available to complete testing. Notify the supervisor, designee or laboratory manager when supplies run low.
  • Checks instruments for proper functioning and calibration, and performs instrument maintenance and troubleshooting as specified in the section procedure manuals. Documents instrument checks, problems and resolutions.
  • Informs the supervisor or designee of any unusual or unexpected test results after verification.
  • Prepares and reviews test reports for accuracy of results before reporting to clinicians or other authorized personnel.

Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent, required. Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Basic Science or related field, required.
  • Licensed by New York State Education Department (NYSED) as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year work experience in the Blood Bank required
  • ASCP certification is preferred.
  • Computer skills and knowledge of  the SoftBank computer system
  • Good communication skills.
  • Knowledge of American Association of Blood Banks Standards.
  • Preventive maintenance of Blood Bank Equipment.
