A lead blood bank technologist manages blood bank operations, performs complex tests, and ensures compliance with regulations. They also mentor junior staff.
In this role, the successful candidate performs established clinical laboratory tests and procedures. Interprets and reports as accurately as possible to assist physicians in diagnosis and treatment. Duties may include blood collection, clerical tasks, answering telephone inquiries, using data processing equipment and all other duties as required in the assigned section.
Responsibilities
- Perform complex tests on blood, urine, and other specimens
- Ensure blood products are safe and compatible
- Perform cross-matching and identify blood types
- Oversee operations
- Ensure compliance with regulations
- Mentor junior staff
- Study the chemical composition of blood and body fluids
- Provide data to clinicians for diagnosis and treatment of diseases
- Collect, label, and prepare blood, plasma, and other components for transfusions
- Store blood draws and maintain documentation and records
Additional Job Responsibilities:
- Ability to perform ABO/Rh Type and Antibody Screening, DAT, Elutions, Antibody Titers and FMH Fetal Screening.
- Must be proficient in Antibody Identification and difficult crossmatch.
- Follows established procedures to perform routine and special analyses. Documents any deviation from established procedure with supervisor’s approval
- Checks that an adequate supply of materials is available to complete testing. Notify the supervisor, designee or laboratory manager when supplies run low.
- Checks instruments for proper functioning and calibration and performs instrument maintenance and troubleshooting as specified in the section procedure manuals. Documents instrument checks, problems, and resolutions.
- Informs the supervisor or designee of any unusual or unexpected test results after verification.
- Prepares and reviews test reports for accuracy of results before reporting to clinicians or other authorized personnel.
