The Department of Neurosurgery at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center provides innovative and comprehensive surgical care to treat patients with a wide range of rare and complex conditions. Our team of highly trained and experienced neurosurgeons use the latest minimally invasive technology and surgical interventions to treat conditions affecting the brain, spine, and peripheral nervous system.
We are currently seeking a House Officer to work alongside the neurosurgeons, neuro intensive care neurologists, neurologists, and advanced care providers. Our ideal candidate will be flexible, willing, and able to work a combination of days, nights, and weekends.
Schedule:
- 4, 12-hour shifts for a total of 48 hours per week
- Day, night, weekend shifts
Duties include:
- H&P on each admission
- Consults include Traumas including brain and spine injuries, hemorrhagic strokes requiring and not requiring surgical intervention, acute ischemic strokes requiring acute neurointervention, brain tumors or abnormalities, wound complications, NPH evaluations, and VPS adjustments.
- Document daily progress notes on all existing admitted patients that have been intervened and will possibly be intervened by neurosurgery in the future.
- Requests consultations for medical clearance and all other medical and surgical specialties and follow up all recommendations in a timely fashion.
- Daily IDT rounds
- Daily Drain management.
- Manage ICP crisis – reassess pts, re-scan pt, communicate with attending, give adequate recommendations regarding EVD management/adjustment or medications.
- Coordinate with ER, OR, other services and family for emergency OR cases.
- Assessing and adjusting pain medication on a regular basis. May require coordination with pain
- Coordinate transfer of patients to other hospitals or institutions when specific service or surgery is not available in house.
- Ambulatory admissions for scheduled procedures/surgeries and for neuro IR diagnostic ambulatory cases. Requires neurological assessment, H&P, admit orders, intra op orders including X-rays and fluoroscopy or medications, same day discharge summary and orders, and post op instructions with follow up appointments.
- Coordinate other surgical services who will be required for additional assistance in certain procedures including:
- Assist all 3 attendings in multiple outpatient clinics requiring detailed neuro examination, progress note, plan of care, ordering additional studies or medications, follow up appointments, and removal of staples / sutures and wound assessment.
- Covering the service and being flexible enough to work a rotating schedule that involves at least one nightshift and weekends on a regular basis.
- Coordinate vascular studies for all post op patients including post thrombectomy or neurointervention patients with questionable hematoma or pseudoaneurysm.
