Flushing Hospital Medical Center (FHMC) is a 293-bed teaching hospital serving the diverse communities of Queens, New York. As part of our commitment to providing exceptional patient care, we are seeking a qualified and motivated Per Diem Pathologists’ Assistant to join our Department of Pathology.

Position Summary

Under the supervision and direction of a licensed Pathologist, the Pathologists’ Assistant performs professional and technical functions in Surgical Pathology. Responsibilities include the gross examination, dissection, description, and sampling of surgical specimens, assistance with frozen sections and intraoperative consultations, specimen photography, and maintenance of accurate pathology documentation and records.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong technical expertise, exceptional attention to detail, and a commitment to high-quality patient care and laboratory excellence.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Perform gross examination, dissection, and dictation of surgical pathology specimens.
Select and submit appropriate tissue sections for histologic processing and microscopic examination.
Assist pathologists with frozen section procedures and intraoperative consultations.
Perform gross specimen photography and maintain photographic records.
Ensure proper specimen accessioning, identification, and tracking.
Present gross findings to supervising pathologists.
Maintain compliance with CAP, CLIA, New York State Department of Health, and hospital regulatory standards.
Participate in quality assurance, quality improvement, patient safety, and accreditation activities.
Assist in maintaining pathology procedure manuals and laboratory documentation.
Collaborate effectively with laboratory personnel, physicians, nursing staff, and hospital departments.
Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and excellent customer service.

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications Education Graduate of a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists’ Assistant Program. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Pathologists’ Assistant Studies or related biological or health sciences discipline. Licensure Requirements To meet the education requirements for licensure as a pathologists’ assistant, you must either have successfully completed a bachelor’s or higher degree in a pathologists’ assistant program registered by the Department, or the substantial equivalent of such a program as determined by the Department, or have a bachelor’s or higher degree in a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) accredited pathologists’ assistant program. Preferred Qualifications Certification as a Pathologists’ Assistant (PA[ASCP]) through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). Previous experience in a hospital-based Surgical Pathology laboratory. Experience with complex specimen grossing and frozen section procedures. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Comprehensive knowledge of surgical pathology techniques and specimen handling. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities. Ability to work independently while maintaining high quality standards. Commitment to patient safety, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement. Physical Requirements Ability to stand for extended periods. Ability to lift, move, and transport pathology specimens and laboratory materials. Manual dexterity and visual acuity necessary for specimen dissection and examination. Ability to work in an environment with potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens, biological materials, chemicals, and laboratory reagents.
