ASSISTANT HEAD NURSE – OPERATING ROOM

We provide general medical, pediatric, and psychiatric emergency services, ambulatory care on and off campus, ambulatory surgery and a broad spectrum of diagnostic and treatment services. We are currently seeking an experienced Assistant Head Nurse for an immediate full-time opportunity in our Operating Room.

JOB SUMMARY:

As the Assistant Head Nurse in our Operating Room (OR) you will serve as a secondary leader, supporting the Head Nurse in overseeing the daily operations of the surgical suite. Within this role you will supervise OR staff, ensuring efficient patient flow, maintain high-quality patient care, and promote adherence to hospital policies and safety standards. You will also play a critical role in staff development, resource management, and incident reporting to enhance the overall effectiveness of our surgical team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Directly supervising and assigning tasks to circulating nurses, scrub nurses, and other OR staff.
  • Ensuring efficient workflow and optimal patient care within the OR.
  • Supporting the Head Nurse in evaluating staff performance and maintaining a positive work environment.
  • Monitoring patient status throughout surgical procedures and ensuring timely interventions.
  • Identifying potential complications and communicating critical information to the surgical team.
  •  Ensuring compliance with aseptic techniques and infection control protocols.
  •  Implementing and monitoring quality improvement initiatives within the OR.
  •  Ensures adherence to safety protocols, best practices, and hospital policies.
  •  Collaborating with quality control team to address patient safety concerns.
  •  Participating in staff orientation and training development programs for new and existing OR personnel.
  • Providing ongoing mentorship, coaching, and performance feedback to nursing staff.
  •  Acting and servicing as a liaison between surgeons, anesthesia providers, surgical technologists, and nursing leadership.
  • Investigating and reporting adverse events, errors, or safety concerns in the OR.
  •  Assisting in scheduling surgical procedures and managing staff assignments.
  • Overseeing the allocation and availability of surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment.
  • Coordinating with supply chain and sterile processing departments to ensure readiness of OR materials.

Requirements
  • Must be a graduate of an Accredited BSN Nursing Program.
  • MSN degree preferred
  • NY State RN License required.
  •  BLS and ACLS certification required; CNOR preferred.
  •  Minimum of 3-5 years of OR nursing experience, with leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
  •  Strong leadership, communication, and critical-thinking skills; proficiency in surgical procedures, patient safety protocols, and OR management.
