VETO TRAUMA COUNSELOR (LMSW / LCSW)

Department of Surgery / Trauma Division

In response to the increase in violence, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, Level 1 Trauma Center, located in South Queens, NY is committed to addressing the root causes of trauma recidivism which has plagued our community. The Violence Elimination and Trauma Outreach (VETO) Program is our Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Program (HVIP) serving teenaged (ages 13 to 17) and adult (ages 18 to 44) victims of interpersonal violence. We are seeking a full-time Licensed Clinical Social Worker or Licensed Master Social Worker to join our program. In this role, the Social Worker will provide trauma-informed counseling, crisis intervention, case management, and other forms of personalized support to survivors of violence and their families. The Social Worker is a team member of the Trauma Division and will work under the supervision of the VETO Program Manager, Trauma Medical Director, Associate Trauma Medical Director, and the Trauma Program Director. Supervision by LCSW available.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assess patient's program eligibility, psychosocial needs, and risks using medical records and screening tools
  • Provide trauma-informed counseling, crisis intervention, and case management vices to eligible patients and their families.
  • Act as a liaison between patients and/or families with interdisciplinary hospital staff and community-based services
  • Maintain appropriate professional patient care documentation in accordance with departmental and hospital policies
  • Attends appropriate project meetings, community meetings and in-services and  educational opportunities
  • Supervise peer counselors and social work interns
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Program Manager, Trauma Medical Director, and/or Administrator of the Department
Requirements
  • New York State Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
  • Master's Degree in Social Work
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Must have a working knowledge of community resources
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to meet short deadlines
  • Superb written and oral communication skills
  • Strong crisis intervention and counseling skills 
  • Intermediate level of proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams) and ability to access multiple web applications
